Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) talk by Michelle and Meryl

Thanks to Michelle and Meryl for sharing information they’ve learned, that they feel strongly about.  While GMO is not new to most people, these are the highlights that hit them after processing the information from the talk they have attended, as well as information available online.  It is a great encouragement for us to continue growing our own food organically and sharing our excesses with others.  Here are the details in case you’ve missed it.

Jonathan Latham re the systems:

 

Worldwide Only 30% of food is grown by industrial scale farming. It is not profitable, very highly subsidised in US and only those who use Monsanto type seeds, sprays and GM are subsidised.

 

What he was saying is that everyone in regulatory bodies is afraid because they depend on the system for their jobs and the system and multinational corporations are integrally interlinked. That is why bad/reductionist science is being given so much power.

 

His enthusiasm for local, organic, whole foods is that it will make many things which support the multi-national corporations system ie. sprays, gm, hybridised seeds, artificial fertilisers, transport, mass processing, big marketing, advertising systems redundant and as more and more people start to grow and eat local it will break the systems power and control over the population. It will also restore health of people and environment.

Jeffrey Smith is a consumer activist against genetically modified food.  His lecture “Are genetically modified foods causing major chronic diseases” (link below) is a good starting point to understand gm foods and how researchers and their studies on the safety of gm foods are silenced or superficially conducted so that the truth about gm doesn’t come out.

 

In this lecture he explains: ~ what can go wrong with gmo, why and how:

~the experiment with rats that showed that gm has so much more impact than roundup – see page over….

~are two main toxins in gmo (genetically modified organism):

1-in corn and cotton – produces its own insecticide that breaks open the stomach of insects to kill them

2-round up – crops are doused with it and absorbed into plant and stored in the food portion we eat

~ how they engineer plants to create their own pesticide, every cell of the plant has a “spraygun” continuously producing Bt Toxin

~how the nature of the genetic engineering process itself messes up the DNA with hundreds of thousands of mutations up and down the DNA

~how allergens are created in the gm soy and corn

~how the researchers doing safety studies on gm crops are silenced so the truth doesn’t come out eg. tested gm potato on rats, it caused proliferative cell growth (precancerous condition) in digesive tract; smaller brains, liver and testicles; partial atrophy of the liver and damaged immune system in just 10 days

~superficial tests are being done by the bio tech industry to get their crops on the market

~ corn produces Bt Toxin, a bacteria that produces proteins which are extremely toxic, and an allergen provoking allergic reactions in humans and animals, it pokes little holes  in the cell walls of insects stomachs to kill them, was claimed not to have any impact on humans but a 2012 study discovered it pokes holes in human cells also…allows contents of the stomach to end ip in area they’re not supposed to be…leading to a host of gastro intestinal tract disorders…in humans called permeable intestines or “leaky gut”…undigested proteins coming into the bloodstream…they’re not supposed to be there…our immune system attacks them as foreign invaders resulting in food allergies, inflammation and auto immune diseases.

~Bt Toxin can explain immune system problems, gastro intestinal problems, organ damage, other diseases related to leaky gut (cognitive disorders).

~gm seed company Monsanto found a bacteria that didn’t die in the presence of the herbicide round up, they took the gene out of the bacterium and put it into soy beans and now they can spray a field of round up ready soy beans and the round up ready soy beans don’t die but the other plant bio-diversity does.

~ how the genetically engineered genes and Bt Toxins transfer to the DNA of our gut flora

~ explains the effect of glysophate (active ingredient in round up)- it is a chelator, it binds with heavy metals and minerals and takes them out of the body; primary food for livestock is round up ready crops (soy, corn, cotton seed, canola, alfalfa, sugar beet) results in weak and sick food fed to animals that we eat weak and sick food from…

~ glysophate is also an endocrine disruptor; kills beneficial gut bacteria that we then spend money on trying to replace (probiotics); and has an impact on serotonin and melatonin.

~ farmer who’s urine killed weeds and plants – (round up absorption)

~rat study re massive tumours…liver, kidney and pituitary …Monsanto claimed the rats passed testing after 90 days…French extended same study from 90 days to 2 years showing the tumours started the next month after the 90 days…ie…how they manipulate testing to hide truth…(study detailed below)

~ the correlation between round up ready gm crops and specific diseases…gastro intestinal diseases eg inflammatory bowel, colitis and Crohn’s disease, obesity, allergies, depression, cancer, infertility, cognitive disorders eg Alzheimers, Parkinson’s, MS…

 

What we can do:

  • Eat organic…Just one week on a diet of mostly organic foods can reduce adults’ exposure to pesticides by 90 percent (see link below);
  • Buy local
  • Grow your own organically
  • Use non-gm whole foods rather than processed
  • Join or create a co-operative to purchase in bulk to reduce cost
  • Reduce demand for gm products by not buying them
  • Know who grows your food and ask how they are grown
  • Share your knowledge about gm in foods
  • What we are doing here…sharing knowledge and food…

Dr Arpad Pusztai – The story behind genetically modified foods

The French study — the most comprehensive GMO safety assessment ever conducted — highlights that concern. It involved 200 rats and spanned two years, the life expectancy of the species of rat used. Previously, the longest study had lasted 240 days, says Michael Hansen, senior scientist at Consumers Union and an expert on GMO research. Industry-funded studies typically last just 90 days.

The researchers investigated how eating Monsanto’s Roundup-Ready corn (and any Roundup herbicide traces that may come with it) affected rats’ health. They separated rats into 10 groups: Three had part of their standard diet replaced at varying levels with Roundup-Ready corn that had been treated with Roundup in the field; three received the same feed protocol, but with untreated Roundup-Ready corn; three ate no GM corn but had tiny amounts of Roundup herbicide in their drinking water; and one control group ate two-thirds standard rat chow and one-third non-GM corn. Each group contained 10 females and 10 males.

The researchers say their results show “severe adverse health effects, including mammary tumors and kidney and liver damage, leading to premature death” from Roundup-Ready corn and Roundup herbicide, whether they were consumed separately or together. Almost all of the ill effects manifested after90 days. By the end of the study, 50 to 80 percent of the females had developed large tumors, compared with 30 percent developing tumors in the control group. In males, liver congestion and necrosis were 2.5 to 5.5 times higher than in the control group, and there were 1.3 to 2.3 times more instances of kidney disease. Overall, among the rats receiving GM corn and/or Roundup, up to 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group.

It seems very statistically significant that you would have an increase from 30% to (50 to 80)%. That’s an increase of 66% to 166%. How can that be statistically insignificant? It seems that studies like this are a clear indication that there is something significantly wrong with GMO technology for food production. —– From what I’ve read inserting new genes by (e.g. shooting GENE covered gold flecks into DNA) causes a lot of effects that would make the food worse, such as; – Inserting into the middle of other genes destroying or altering their functionality – having the gene on all the time (by using a protein that keeps the gene turned on continuously) in all the cells so that the poison or protein is always being produced throughout the plant (This I assume would lead to lower nutrition since the plant is spending a lot of its resources producing a toxin continuously) – the activator may be turning on inactive genes that produce toxins or by producing more of a protein than normal produces unwanted protein production (e.g. 30,000 genes in the human body produce 80,000 different proteins -> a protein has more than one function) – Altering the function of other genes due to the fact that genes interact in a complicated way with each other and not singly as Genetic Modification assumes – using marker genes, that are cheaper, but promote anti-biotic resistance – the addition of extra DNA that my produce toxins – proteins that are possibly allergenic being added to foods that are normally not allergenic —– The theories to explain why GMO’s are bad for you make sense. The theories to explain why GMO’ are good for you just say there’s no definitive proof it’s bad for you. That’s not good science

Dr Arpad Pusztai, world’s leading researcher in his field, top nutritional researcher at Rowett Research Institute, Scotland, for 36 years, won a grant from UK government over27 competing applicants.

Grant was to figure out how to test for the safety of GMOs.

The protocols that he was going to develop were supposed to be implemented into the EU regulatory framework so that anyone who wanted to get GMOs on the market had to go through Pusztai’s protocols.

He put a genetically engineered potato through an animal study he had designed for GMO.

The potato had been inserted with a gene from a snowdrop plant which produces insecticide (lectins).

The potato was tested on rats – 3 groups:

1-gm potato

2-non-gm potato (same spud type)

3-insecticide (that the gm potato produced in the same amount)

Only group 1 got sick – why? – it was not the insecticide, it was the process of genetic engineering

Rats – partial atrophy of the liver, potentially precancerous cell growth in digestive tract (proliferative cell growth ie.pre-tumour), smaller brains, livers and testicles, damaged immune systems – in 10 days!

Pusztai was aware that his potatoes would have passed the superficial tests done by the bio-tech industry to get their crops on the market.  Industry tests never looked at the gut lining, organ damage, immune system, size of the organs.

The minister of agriculture was meeting in Brussels to do a vote on GMO and needed a scientific opinion on the submissions of the bio-tech industry.

Pusztai’s director was on the exclusive committee that approved the use of gm in the UK.

He asked Pusztai to look at the submissions (which were normally confidential) and give a scientific opinion.

After looking at some of the submissions, Pusztai realised he was doing safety studies while the bio-tech industry were doing as little as possible to get their foods on the marker as quickly as possible.

He said their research was poor, flimsy, superficial and really bad science.

He called the minister and said there’s not enough information here to allow these foods to be fed to humans or animals.  The minister said those foods had been approved 2 years ago.  Pusztai realised those foods were being sold in the UK and no one knew.

He was interviewed on TV about his rat study result, he said he didn’t think it was fair to use the public as guinea pigs and that he wouldn’t put GMOs in his mouth.

After this TV interview phones were ringing hot, Pusztai expected great publicity and funds for the Institute where he worked as a result of the research outcome publicity.

Pusztai’s director took a call from the prime minister’s office.

This director had been groomed to become head of the new food standards agency that was about to be created by the UK prime minister.

 

The next day Pusztai was fired by that director after 35 years

and silenced with threats of a law suit (had a gag order on him),

the 20 member research team was disbanded and

they never implemented Pusztai’s protocols.

Instead the Rowett Institute, the UK government and the bio-tech industry embarked on a campaign to destroy his reputation.
